Throughout the winter months, we must keep our cars in the garage in order to keep them warm for our morning commutes to work. Nobody enjoys clearing snow and hopping into a freezing car at seven in the morning.
However, as spring moves into summer, it becomes more reasonable for you to leave your car outside more often. This opens up considerable space in your garage that wasn’t previously available. It’s up to you whether you want to utilize that space for something productive or let it sit unused through the summer months.
There are many different uses for garage space that isn’t taken up by your vehicles. Here are a few tips to help you turn your garage into a fun summer hangout area:
- A NEW Floor Solution
Making your garage more comfortable for people to hang out in requires examining alternative flooring solutions. Concrete garage floors are unpleasant to walk around on in socks or bare feet, but a good-quality refinished floor that is cleaned regularly can provide an excellent space for just about any activity you can think of.
For added comfort, consider finding a few rugs or leftover carpeting to throw down on top of your garage’s floor. Many carpeting companies will throw away excess carpeting that isn’t used on a particular job. If you play your cards right, you can convince these companies to donate excess carpet to your cause, rather than just throw it away.
- Lighting and Heating
If you want people to enjoy hanging out in your garage, they must be able to see what they’re doing. It’s also important for you to maintain a comfortable temperature in your new hangout area. Most garages aren’t particularly well-insulated. A few well-placed space heaters should do the trick.
- Make it Fun
What do your friends and family members like to do in their free time? What’s going to be the ‘draw’ that makes people want to spend time in your garage? Maybe it’s a pool table. Maybe your friends are more into Ping-Pong.
Whatever it is, make sure you think about what activities would be fun in your new play space. Add some items that make your garage a bit more entertaining.
- Replace Your Garage Door
Even if converting your garage into a hangout area is only a seasonal solution, you might consider upgrading your garage door. Standard doors tend to let a lot of heat out and aren’t the best way to keep sound in either. If you have a band or a drum kit in your garage, this can be especially important.
As the summer moves into its hottest months, a shaded place for your family and friends to hang out will become increasingly in-demand. Turning your garage into a fun space for gatherings can add much needed life to your home. The tips mentioned above are designed to help you create a space that your friends will want to come back to again and again.
